Composite Image Assignment
September 8, 2009

Objective:
Become familiar with the workings of image manipulation.

Learning Outcomes:
As a result of the lecture, demonstration, and lab practice regarding image manipulation, students should be able to:

  • Learn about compressed and uncompressed images
  • Recognize different file types and their properties
  • Learn the basic brushes and tools
  • Be able to create an image using brushes and tools

Coursework Procedure:
You will create a composite image where in your likeness will appear. First you must select a background image. This can come from any digital images you may already possess, or that you download from the Internet. Then you will need to take a picture of yourself with a digital camera (if you don't have access to one, I can provide one). You need to pose yourself so that you can insert yourself into the background image you selected as if you were part of the action in the image. The composite must include the following elements:

  1. You must select a background image from the Internet, that you already possess, or a scan.
  2. You will then take a digital image of yourself posing as you would fit into the background image.
  3. You will insert the digital image of yourself into the background image you selected. Use great care and every tool you can find in GIMP (or Adobe Photoshop if you own it) to make your image look like it belongs in the scene.
  4. You MUST save your image in either the Photoshop Document format (.psd) or the native GIMP format (.xcf) that shows the layers you worked in (I cannot evaluate this assignment if you flatten the image or export it to flattened format like .tif, .jpg, .png).

Assignment Due:
You must complete your composite image by noon on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, email it to me or upload to Blackboard.
